Tutoring Experience
I have been a tutor for the past 4 years, focusing on Philosophy and English as a Second Language. I have worked for tutoring companies in the past as well as tutoring students privately.
Teaching both undergraduate and high school students has given me the experience to tailor the subjects to students of various levels. In Philosophy, I have helped students improve their grades as well as their relationship to the subjects. For example, one of my students was completely lost when reading the works of Heidegger, but ended up understanding and finding his thoughts very valuable.
I have also been the Chair of the philosophy society at my university and consequently have extensive experience explaining complex concepts to younger students. In English, I have helped students achieve and surpass their desired scores on a variety of exams, such as the CAE and IELTS.
Tutoring Approach
Philosophy can be especially tough to get to grips with, as it can seem abstract and removed from everyday life.
I have succeeded with many students on this point specifically, by showing them how the philosophical topic in question directly relates to their lives, which has been effective for assessment and highly rewarding for both parties. When teaching English, I also focus on everyday use and conversation over mechanical learning and have had much success with that method.
I tailor the topics we cover to suit the students’ interests so that what they learn is both useful and enjoyable.
